JUSTICE AND PEACE COMMITTEE OF SACRED HEART CHURCH

MISSION STATEMENT

We, the Justice and Peace Committee of Sacred Heart Church of Bayside, Queens, as Christians of the Roman Catholic Tradition, take seriously the Gospel mandate of “serving the least among us.”

In response to the United States Bishops’ call to the Church to embrace social justice as a “constitutive element of the Gospel,” we commit ourselves through prayer, education and service to:

  • Animating the faith community of Sacred Heart to be formed in the great Tradition of Catholic Social Teaching
  •  Communicating and collaborating with both our parish community and multiple agencies engaged in social justice both religious and secular
  • Fostering action in behalf of justice on local national and international levels

“Racism Is a Life Issue”

Recalling the bishops’ most recent pastoral letter against racism, the bishops say “People of good conscience must never turn a blind eye when citizens are being deprived of their human dignity and even their lives. Indifference is not an option.” And they forcefully repeat, “As bishops, we unequivocally state that racism is a life issue.”
