Sometimes, moreover, if the place itself and the nature of the community permit, it will be appropriate to celebrate the Liturgy of the Word, including a homily, with the children in a separate, but not too distant room. Then, before the Eucharistic Liturgy begins, the children are led to the place where the adults have meanwhile celebrated their own liturgy of the word. — Directory for Masses with Children, No. 17
WHAT IS CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD?
The children gather with their families in the church. After the opening prayer, the children, Pre-Kindergarten through 6th grade, are invited to move from the main church and go to the church hall. There the readings of the day are read and the gospel proclaimed and spoken about in age-appropriate language.
The children return to the assembly during the offertory procession. If young children are apprehensive about leaving, their parents may accompany them to the church hall.
